Dorchester County to Hold Special Election for County Council District 5 Seat
The Dorchester County Board of Elections & Voter Registration will hold a Special Election for an unexpired term for the Dorchester County Council District 5 seat.
Con Chellis resigned his District 5 seat on Monday, November 19, 2018 after being elected to represent District 94 in the South Carolina State House of Representatives beginning in January 2019.
Filing for Republican and Democratic Candidates opens at noon on Friday, December 7, 2018 and closes at noon on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Filing must be completed at the Voter Registration Office located at 201 Johnston Street in St. George, during normal business hours (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM Monday – Friday) or between 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM on Saturday, December 15, 2018.
To file candidates must submit a completed Statement of Intention of Candidacy & Party Pledge (SICPP) form and pay a filing fee of $333.33. The Filing fee should be paid via a check made payable to the appropriate state political party. Note: A candidate seeking the nomination of a party nominating by convention does not pay a filing fee.
Candidates are also required to file a Statement of Economic Interests and a Campaign Disclosure online with the State Ethics Commission at http://ethics.sc.gov. Failure to file these documents may result in a candidate fine but will not disqualify a candidate from the election.
Voter Registration Deadline
District 5 residents who would like to vote in the Special Primary Election must be registered to vote no later than December 30, 2018. Residents can register to vote and/or update their voter registration in-person at the Voter Registration Office during normal business hours, online at SCVotes.org, or by mail.
Voters must register again if they have changed counties or moved since the last election.
Beginning on Friday, December 28, 2018 – Monday, January 28, 2019, residents in Dorchester County District 5 can vote absentee at the Voter Registration office located at 201 Johnston Street, St. George, SC 29477. Absentee voting will be available between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday, excluding holidays.
The Special Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. District 5 residents will vote at the same polling location as the November 6th General Election. Residents may locate their polling location via an interactive map on this site.
If necessary, a runoff will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.
The Special Election will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.
A valid photo ID must be presented to vote absentee in-person or on Election Day.
