Additional Norfolk Southern Road Closures
A Norfolk Southern (NS) surfacing gang will be installing final paving at several crossings in Charleston and Dorchester Counties beginning on Thursday, February 21, 2019 – the end of the following week.
This work will put the final touches on the dual rail project and ensure the riding surface is smooth for train movement. The surfacing gang can complete approximately two-to-five miles per day. This is dependent on track time and track configuration.
NS completed the final paving through the major crossings (Ashley Phosphate Road, Ladson Road, Main Street, North Cedar Street, and Hickory Street) directly behind the dual rail gang, earlier this month. No work is scheduled for these crossings.
The roads/crossings scheduled for final paving are listed below. Roads will be temporarily closed, and all traffic detoured, while the work is ongoing. RoadSafe will be conducting all road closures/detours on behalf of NS.
Note: The information below will be updated on the Dorchester County website as information becomes available.
Each crossing will be closed for approximately three-to-five hours. Roads do not typically remain closed overnight unless problems arise.
Citizens are asked to keep in mind that railroad maintenance is not something that is “scheduled.” The gang must be given track time by a dispatcher to do the maintenance work. Weather delays and equipment problems are also factors with this type of work.
