At 10:21 PM on Thursday, July 4, 2019, Dorchester County Fire Rescue (DCFR) received an alarm for a structure fire at 143 Marshside Drive in the Legend Oaks community.

Crews arrived on scene and found a large two-story residential home with extensive smoke and fire conditions coming from the structure. The family was accounted for and no one was inside the home.

The fire was under control in twenty-five (25) minutes with extensive salvage and overhaul operations following. The family dog was located, unharmed after the fire was extinguished.

North Charleston Fire Department and Summerville Fire Rescue provided automatic aid. Approximately thirty (30) fire personnel responded.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and Dorchester County EMS (DCEMS) also responded to the scene.  Two firefighters with minor injuries were treated on-scene by DCEMS.

The cause of the fire was used fireworks that were disposed of in the household garbage can inside the garage.

Dorchester County Fire Chief, Tres Atkinson reminds residents to submerge used fireworks in an outside container and let them soak overnight, prior to disposing.
