Dorchester County Mailing Reassessment Notices to Property Owners

Post Date:08/09/2019 9:00 AM

On Friday, August 9, 2019, the Dorchester County Assessor’s Office mailed Assessment Notices to all property owners in Dorchester County.

State Statute mandates that licensed appraisers verify all property information, every five years, to determine the fair market value.

To find the value of any piece of property, the County Assessor's Office must know the price for which properties similar to it are selling, what it would cost today to replace, how much it takes to operate and repair, what rent the property may earn, and other facts affecting its value, such as the current rate of interest charged for borrowing the money to buy or build properties.

After reviewing the notice, should a property owner choose to appeal the assessed value, they must complete the bottom portion of the notice or submit an appeal letter (with documentation to support the appeal). The instructions for appeal are provided on the back of the notice. The deadline to appeal is Wednesday, November 7, 2019 (90 days from the date the notices were sent). If the property owner is not appealing the assessed value, no action is required.

Property owners are asked to contact the Dorchester County Assessor’s Office at (843) 832-0162 (option 5) with any/all questions.
