Dorchester County Convenience Sites Are Open

Dorchester County maintains Operating Condition (OPCON) 1, closely monitoring Hurricane Dorian.

All Dorchester County Convenience Sites are open for normal operations. Residents are asked to properly dispose of items at their closest convenience site prior to the onset of tropical-storm-force winds.

Sandbags

Beginning at 10:00 AM on Today, Tuesday September 3, 2019 sandbags and sand will be available at the below locations. Citizens must bring their own shovel and fill their own bags. Note: Bags should only be filled 2/3 of the way full, to be effective. There will be a limit of 12 sandbags per household.

Residents must have a state issued ID or an Active Military ID to show proof of residency.

Evacuation Order for Zone D in Dorchester County

Governor Henry McMaster, has ordered the evacuation of coastal South Carolina residents for their personal safety as Hurricane Dorian approaches. The evacuation order includes Zone D in Dorchester County.

Zone D includes: All properties along the Ashley River between Ashley River Road and Dorchester Road, from the Charleston County line to Bacons Bridge Rd. Properties that front the Sawmill Branch from Dorchester Road to Luden Road including Arbor Oaks, Sawbranch Apartments, Millbrook Apartments, and Creekside. Properties near Eagle Creek between Ladson Road and Parlor Road from Dorchester Road to the Charleston County line. Southeast portions of the county in the vicinity of Bear Swamp, Horse Savannah Swamp, Fishburne Creek, and Rantowles Creek including the Poplar Grove Community. All residents living in flood-prone areas or mobile/manufactured homes.

The hurricane evacuation zones are based on storm surge risk. Based on the forecast, Zone D in Dorchester County is the only zone required to evacuate. If you live in Zone E, F, or a low-lying/ flood-prone area and do not feel safe, please consider evacuating, relocating with family or friends or a the pet-friendly shelter at DuBose Middle School.

Shelter

Dorchester County has opened a pet-friendly shelter at DuBose Middle School, located at 1005 DuBose School Road, Summerville, SC 29483. Currently there are 7 shelterees at the shelter and 2 pets.

Residents evacuating to a shelter should pack minimally, bringing only the essentials i.e. bedding (blankets or sleeping bag, pillows, air mattresses or cots) personal hygiene products, a form of identification, all medications, important documents, a change of clothes, food and water for 3-4 days.

Additional shelters are on standby to open if/when the need arises. Those shelters will be announced if/when they open.

Special Medical Needs

Residents who feel they may need to relocate to a special medical needs shelter should call the SCDHEC triage phone line at 1-855-472-3432 followed by #5.

Pets

The Shelter will only accept crated, small, domesticated animals. At least one family member must remain on premise.

Residents who would like to utilize the pet shelter will be responsible for bringing all pet supplies including, but not limited to the below:

  1. Leash
  2. Vaccination Records
  3. Pet Food
  4. Water & Food Bowls
  5. Sheet or Blanket to cover Kennel
  6. Litter and Litter Box
  7. Medication (if needed)
  8. Training Pads for kennel

County Offices and School Closures

Beginning Tuesday, September 3 all Dorchester County Offices, Dorchester School District Two and Four Schools, the Dorchester County Career & Technology Center and the Dorchester County Library will be closed until further notice.
