One Confirmed Case of COVID-19 in Dorchester County

Earlier today, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Services (DHEC) confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in Dorchester County.

Dorchester County continues to closely monitor COVID-19 and maintains a direct line of communication with DHEC, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, and Summerville Medical Center. DHEC is the lead agency. 

Animal Control

Dorchester County Animal Control is taking all precautions to keep officers and citizens safe by prioritizing urgent calls. Although the office is closed to the public, animal control officers are available to assist residents by phone or email. If immediate assistance is needed with injured or aggressive animals, or if someone has become ill and cannot care for their animals please contact our office at (843) 832-0015 and/or Residents may also contact the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office at (843) 832-0300 in Summerville or (843) 563-0259 in St. George to have Animal Control dispatched. All non-emergency calls/cases will be responded to when Dorchester County returns to normal operations.


In recognition of the hardships the COVID-19 pandemic may cause throughout the community, all evictions currently ordered have been rescheduled for after May 1.

Furthermore, the court will not accept applications for evictions, schedule hearings, or proceed in any other manner regarding evictions until ordered by the Chief Justice. However, case-by-case exceptions for evictions may be made for matters that involve essential services and/or harm to person or property.

Chief Justice Beatty has also ordered a moratorium in Master-in-Equity courts statewide on foreclosure hearings and sales.

Summerville CPW

Summerville CPW continues to take the necessary steps to maintain the health and safety of our staff, which is essential to providing our customers with clean water and reliable services. With that said and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to close the administrative offices at 215 N. Cedar Street, including the drive-thru, to the public effective Friday, March 20 until further notice.

While the offices are closed, staff will continue to be available by phone (843-871-0810) and email ( Payments can still be dropped off in the night box in the first lane of the drive-thru, or via the usual methods (by phone, online, bank draft, etc.). Please visit our website ( for details.

SCPW has suspended disconnections due to nonpayment of services at this time; however, we do encourage you to pay as much of your bill as you can to prevent accumulation of a larger balance. Customers experiencing financial hardship are asked to call or email the office to schedule payment arrangements.

The Dorchester County Board of Zoning Appeals Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 25 has been canceled.

The Dorchester County Planning Commission Meeting scheduled for Tuesday; April 2 has been canceled.
