Dorchester County is pleased to announce the construction commencement of the Ladson Road Streetscaping Project, one of multiple projects in the Oakbrook Redevelopment Plan that is funded by the Oakbrook Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District.
This transformative project will enhance approximately two miles of Ladson Road, from the intersection of Travelers Boulevard to the intersection of Coopers Ridge Boulevard. The improvements include:
- Installation of raised landscaped medians with attractive plantings
- Construction of dedicated turn lanes at key intersections
- Addition of street lighting to improve safety and aesthetics
These enhancements are designed to improve traffic flow, increase vehicle and pedestrian safety, and beautify the corridor, supporting the County’s strategic plan to revitalize the Oakbrook area of Summerville. A PDF exhibit of the Ladson Road Streetscaping Project is available to view here.
Construction of the roadway improvements began in late October 2025 with a construction duration of 10 months. During construction, the traveling public and surrounding residents can expect periodic lane closures. During periods of lane closures, Ladson Road will remain open and access to surrounding homes and businesses will be coordinated and maintained throughout the lane closure period. The Contractor will be working from the Travelers Boulevard end of the project and work Northeast in 5 sections towards Wallace Ackerman Drive so that the full length of the project is not impacted by construction all at once. Each of the 5 sections will consist of the following: installation of erosion control measures, full depth asphalt removal, installation of drainage crossline piping, drainage structures and underdrains, Installation of concrete curb and gutter and medians, and placement of a final surface course of asphalt with associated stripping.
Lighting and landscaping will be installed by separate contractors.
Public Meeting
Dorchester County hosted a public meeting at the Dorchester County Council Chambers in Summerville on Monday, August 22, 2022. The meeting was designed to answer questions and provide information on the streetscape improvements planned for Ladson Road, from the termination of the SCDOT Dorchester Road Safety Improvement project to Coopers Ridge Blvd.
This meeting included a drop-in type format with displays for viewing, and citizens had the opportunity to provide written comments. The design is schematic and input will be evaluated and incorporated into the project where feasible.
This project consists of landscaped median improvements to approximately 2 miles of Ladson Road. The improvements involve constructing dedicated turn lanes at key intersections and the installation of raised landscaped medians with plantings and street lights.
Oakbrook Redevelopment
The Ladson Road Streetscape Project is part of the Oakbrook Redevelopment Plan that outlines a comprehensive, multi-agency plan to revitalize the Oakbrook area. The plan allows for public infrastructure projects that are needed to reduce or eliminate blighted areas.
The goal is to revitalize Oakbrook as an Urban Village/Eco-Tourism Destination by redeveloping under-utilized commercial properties into an active urban neighborhood center.
In order to achieve this goal, the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District was created to:
- Improve the transportation and utilities infrastructure
- Create modern streetscaping
- Make improvements to or construct public buildings and environmental, cultural, recreational and school facilities
